Use of bogus degree from diploma mills could be a crime

You should be aware of the different types of fake degrees prevailing in Australia. Don't fall into their traps:

• You may be offered testimony and academic transcripts at any price via the internet without studying, involving accredited Australian or overseas universities, most likely an offer for sale being made to you for a degree with a clear disclaimer indicating that the qualification is fake and is to be used only for novelty purposes. If you buy this for decoration in your room, it is alright. But, don't use it for applying a job, or for your business profile. Remember the certificate has a disclaimer. Nevertheless, don't you think it is too expensive to get that piece of paper on the wall.
• You may be offered a program without much study involved for a degree from a diploma mill that uses an Australian address and that requires you to remit money to an Australian post box.
• You may also be offered a program without studying for a degree by an institution purported to be an Australian institution or associated with Australia. This is a diploma mill.
• Beware of the counterfeits. You may receive an offer for a degree from a reputable Australian or overseas university. This is a copy printed from a printer forging the certificates of the said university. If you are an employer, don’t be cheated. Protect your business interests, check with the university concerned. Unless he has intention to deceive, your recruit would have no objection to your checking for authenticity.

Use of the fake degree for the intended purpose of securing a job, or presenting yourself as a degree holder for business dealings could be a crime. In New South Wales, the penalty for the user or the diploma mills could be a prison sentence prosecuted under their Crime Act 1990.

An Investigation by Nigel Morris, BBC London Investigations Producer revealed a bogus university "has been allowed to flourish in the UK for the last seven years." "The "U" has 5,000 students worldwide and thousands of graduates" and it projects an "illusion enhanced by the university's continued use of Oxford and Cambridge facilities to stage its award ceremonies."
