What are Diploma Mills?

Diploma Mills have existed for decades - before the internet was born, diploma mills operate using mail order. They do not have a “campus” and normally operate from phone boiler rooms. They mislead the public by claiming that they are “accredited” or “internationally accredited” by a bogus accreditation agency. They advertise aggressively on magazines (sometimes even reputable magazines), internet newsgroups, and impressive websites.

So how do I differentiate between diploma mills and legitimate online universities?

When in doubt check with the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.org).
• Offers that place heavy emphasis on offering college credits for lifetime or real world experience.
• Tuition paid on a per-degree basis, or discounts for enrolling in multiple degree programs. Traditional colleges charge by credit hours, course, or semester.
• Little or no interaction with professors.
• Names that are similar to well known reputable universities.
• Addresses that are box numbers or suites. That campus may very well be a mail drop box or someone’s attic.

I received a few unsolicited e-mails from So-and-so University, does that mean they are fake college degrees?

Not really. Some universities offer incentives to affiliates who can refer a potential customer, the reason why you may have received unsolicited e-mail is because some affiliates use unethical ways (unsolicited e-mails) to promote the university.
